Kaduna PDP Faces Mass Defection as Ashiru's Spokesman Joins APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna is bracing for a potential mass defection as prominent members are poised to leave the party in large numbers. The indication of the impending exodus became evident on Friday when the prominent spokesperson of the Party Campaign Council, Alhaji Yakubu Lere, resigned his membership of the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Lere Local Government and copied to the Lere Local and Kaduna State chairmen of the party, Lere cited his long-time friendship with Sen Uba Sani, who is now the governor of Kaduna State, as the reason for his decision to abandon the PDP. He expressed that he could not in good conscience remain in opposition while his childhood friend held the position of governor.

Lere conveyed his gratitude to the party for the support he received during his 12-year tenure in the PDP. However, his conviction to align with the ruling party led him to make the difficult choice to withdraw his membership from the PDP.

The exit of Alhaji Yakubu Lere is seen as a significant blow to the PDP, and there are indications that other prominent members might follow suit and join the APC. The potential loss of key members is a cause of concern for the PDP's leadership in the state as they grapple with the challenge of retaining party cohesion.
