Nigeria's Disappointment: A Reflection on 63 Years of Independence, According to Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed deep concern over Nigeria's failure to meet expectations in the 63 years since gaining independence. In a keynote address at the public presentation of 'Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,' a book written by former Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, Obasanjo lamented that Nigeria had not only disappointed itself but also Africa and the global community.

During the event held in Abuja, attended by prominent past and current government officials, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Obasanjo emphasized the need to admit failure in order to chart a new course for the country. He cited ego, ethnic and religious divisions, as well as a lack of understanding of development principles, as significant obstacles to progress.

Obasanjo identified peace, security, justice, equity, and inclusivity as crucial factors for all-round development. He also highlighted the alarming number of out-of-school children, which exceeds 20 million, as a severe issue with dire consequences for the nation's future.

The former President underscored the importance of skill acquisition, empowerment, and employment opportunities for the youth, which he believes have been largely overlooked. He attributed the rise of banditry, Boko Haram, kidnapping, and organized crimes to the dire socio-economic situation caused by poorly implemented policies or a lack thereof.

Obasanjo's speech called for an urgent and honest assessment of Nigeria's challenges and a commitment to address them to secure a brighter future for the nation.
