Abacha's Former Aide, Middle Belt Elders Back Ganduje as APC Acting Chair
Abdullahi Ganduje
A former Principal Staff Officer to the late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Gen. Lawrence Onoja, and some Middle Belt elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have thrown their support behind former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, to replace the immediate past National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
The zonal party elders, however, have a caveat: Ganduje should only be allowed to serve in an acting capacity pending the conduct of a national convention.
This endorsement comes just days after the APC chairmen in seven states of the North-West similarly endorsed the 73-year-old politician at a meeting in Kaduna. Additionally, a Coalition of North-Central Leaders on Thursday also backed the former governor to emerge as the national chairman of the party.
However, the choice of Ganduje as the preferred candidate of President Bola Tinubu and the APC governors has sparked mixed feelings among party faithful and members of the ruling party. While some party chieftains believe that the prospective replacement for Adamu should come from Nasarawa State in line with the zoning arrangement of the APC, others are in favor of the former Kano governor.
Gen. Onoja, speaking on behalf of the Middle Belt delegation, emphasized that any readjustment in the party's zoning formula should be determined by a convention. He stated, "It is not surprising therefore that since the Progressive Governors’ Forum endorsed Ganduje’s candidature, many political interest groups have similarly endorsed him to lead the party in an acting capacity."
The Middle Belt elders' endorsement reflects their belief in Ganduje's ability to effectively steer the party as acting chairman until substantive leadership positions are filled at the next convention in line with the party's constitution. Their focus lies in merit, quality, and continuity in leadership for the APC.
In conclusion, the Middle Belt elders implored all concerned parties and the media to support Ganduje's candidacy and strive for the success of the party and the interest of Nigeria as a whole. With support from influential figures and key party leaders, Ganduje's candidacy for the acting chairmanship position gains momentum within the APC.
