Fast-Charging Smartphones Dominate Global Market, Says Report
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, fast charging-capable smartphones are taking over the global smartphone market. In Q1 2023, sales of fast charging-capable smartphones accounted for nearly 80% of the total global smartphone market, up from 74% in Q1 2022.
The increasing adoption of fast charging-capable smartphones is driving the growing smartphone usage and continuous advancements in hardware. Smartphone users are increasingly spending more time on their devices, using them to stay connected, browse the internet, stream content, and play games. These activities, along with the widespread adoption of 5G connectivity and improvements in cameras, displays, and processors, have increased the power requirements of smartphones, leading to the demand for faster-charging capabilities.
Nearly half of all smartphone users now spend at least five hours a day on their devices, necessitating smartphones that can be charged quickly to ensure uninterrupted usage throughout the day. Smartphone brands have recognized this need and are embedding fast-charging capabilities into their product portfolios.
Chinese-made phones have been leveraging fast charging as a selling point to attract consumers. However, other smartphone brands are also focusing on making fast-charging technology more affordable.
The report reveals that in Q1 2023, the average power for fast-charging smartphones globally reached 34W, compared to 30W in Q1 2022 and 18W in Q1 2018, indicating increasing investments in technology.
Smartphones capable of delivering more than 30W can fully charge a completely drained phone in approximately an hour, making it a compelling selling point for smartphone brands. As consumers seek faster-charging options to keep up with their busy lifestyles, the dominance of fast-charging smartphones in the market is likely to continue to grow.
