Students Injured in Violent Robbery Attack at ATBU Off-Campus Lodge

A harrowing incident occurred at the off-campus lodge of Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi State, where armed robbers invaded the premises. The attack, which took place last Thursday in the Sabon Kaura area of Bauchi metropolis, saw about 20 robbers simultaneously targeting three rooms and making off with valuable items, including laptops and mobile phones. The violent robbery left one student severely injured and in need of immediate medical attention.

Details of the Incident:

The robbers, numbering approximately 20, stormed the off-campus lodge and launched an aggressive attack on the occupants of three rooms. During the ordeal, they forcefully took away two laptops and six mobile phones, causing terror and panic among the students.

Aminu Baba, a 500-level quantitative survey student at ATBU, was among the victims, and he sustained a deep machete cut on his hand while trying to escape from the attackers. The severity of his injury necessitated his immediate transportation to the hospital.

Another student in the affected lodge shared his account of the incident, revealing that they were caught off guard by the robbers. The attackers showed no mercy, sparing neither the students nor neighbors from the next compound who came to their aid during the attack.

Response and Lack of Police Presence:

The students recounted that the robbery lasted for about 20 minutes, but despite their calls for help, the police did not arrive at the scene. Only neighbors came to sympathize and offer assistance after the robbers had left.

As of the time of reporting, the Bauchi State Police Command has not confirmed the incident. Attempts to reach the police spokesman, SP Ahmed Wakili, for a statement were unsuccessful.

Conclusion:

The invasion of the ATBU off-campus lodge by armed robbers, resulting in injuries to students and theft of their belongings, underscores the need for improved security measures in and around educational institutions. Prompt response by law enforcement is vital to safeguard the lives and property of students and residents in the area. Authorities must take immediate action to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of students living off-campus. Additionally, it is crucial for students and residents to be vigilant and implement security measures to protect themselves and their property in such areas.
