Delta Governor Condemns Killing of 2-Year-Old by NDLEA Officials

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed strong condemnation over the killing of a two-year-old boy, Ivan Omorhiakogbe, allegedly shot by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In a condolence message conveyed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Festus Ahon, to the family of the deceased in Asaba, the governor described the incident as regrettable and avoidable if the NDLEA officers had operated in accordance with their rules of engagement.

The tragic incident occurred during an operation by the NDLEA, Delta Command, in the Okpanam area of the State capital, where young Ivan was hit by a "stray bullet."

Governor Oborevwori called on the NDLEA authorities and the Delta State Police Command to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the young boy and the injury sustained by his brother. He emphasized the need to bring the culprits to justice and prevent any future occurrence of such tragic events.

Expressing condolences to the family of Fidelis Omorhiakogbe, the governor emphasized that no matter the provocation, armed security personnel must adhere to standard procedures and rules of engagement in their operations. He emphasized the importance of following international best practices to avoid catastrophic incidents like this.

Governor Oborevwori concluded by urging the NDLEA and Police authorities to conduct a transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
