FIFA Imposes Registration Ban on Watford over Samuel Kalu Transfer
English Premier League champions, Watford, have been hit with a registration ban by FIFA in relation to their signing of Nigerian winger, Samuel Kalu.
According to the Watford Observer, the registration ban is a result of the club's failure to meet its financial obligations towards Megamu Football Academy Club, a youth club in Nigeria. The academy claims that they have not received their solidarity payment for their role in the development of Kalu, who joined Watford from Bordeaux in July 2022.
A letter signed by Julien Deux, head of FIFA judicial bodies (adjudicatory), stated that Watford has not yet fulfilled its financial obligations towards Megamu Football Academy Club. As a consequence, FIFA has imposed a ban on Watford from registering new players internationally, effective from July 19, 2023. Additionally, the Football Association has been requested to implement a ban on Watford from registering new players at the national level.
However, the Watford Observer also reported that this is an administrative matter that is close to being resolved. The club is likely working to resolve the financial issues with Megamu Football Academy Club to lift the registration ban.
The situation highlights the importance of fulfilling financial commitments in player transfers and the consequences clubs face if they fail to do so, as enforced by FIFA regulations.
