Generator Fumes Claim Lives of Anambra Couple, Two Children, and In-law
In a heartbreaking incident, a couple, their two children, and the wife's mother, along with an apprentice, tragically lost their lives after inhaling poisonous fumes from a generator at their residence in Nkwele Ezunaka, Onitsha, Anambra State. The incident was confirmed by the Anambra State Police Command.
According to sources, the couple had recently welcomed a newborn baby, and the husband planned to surprise his wife by moving the family to their new house. It was their first night in the new home when the unfortunate event occurred, leaving only the four-day-old baby as the lone survivor.
The incident came to light when a friend, who was supposed to join them in their celebration that night but couldn't make it, went to their house the next morning and found the doors locked with the generator still running.
As narrated by a source, the family had been celebrating their new house when a sudden power outage prompted the husband to switch on the generator, which was stationed at the verandah close to the bedroom. Amidst the celebration, they all eventually fell asleep and forgot to turn off the generator.
When the friend discovered the locked doors and the generator still running, he raised an alarm, and other neighbors forced the door open, only to find the lifeless bodies inside. Efforts to revive the unconscious wife and one of the daughters failed, and they were pronounced dead after being rushed to St. Charles Borromeo Hospital in Onitsha.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning. The victims were identified as a middle-aged man named Ifeanyi, who hailed from Enugu State and worked as a trader at the Onitsha Bridge Head Market.
The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident but stated that the cause of the tragedy is still under investigation, and further details will be released once the investigation is concluded.
