NDLEA Foils Drug Trafficking Attempts: Europe-bound Undergraduate and Lagos Lawyer Arrested

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, arresting a 19-year-old student and a Lagos-based lawyer for attempting to smuggle drugs to Europe and within Nigeria, respectively.


Benjamin Daberechi, the 19-year-old student, was apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, during an outward clearance on Turkish Airlines flight TK 0624. He was trying to export 7.2 kg of methamphetamine cleverly concealed in crayfish, intending to take it to Europe where he was going for undergraduate studies in Cyprus. The suspect was caught after a thorough search of his luggage revealed the illicit substance, and a field test confirmed it to be methamphetamine.


In a separate operation, the NDLEA arrested a female lawyer, Ebikpolade Helen, in her Lekki apartment, where they recovered 5 kg of cannabis and 12 bottles of skuchies. Skuchies are a dangerous mixture of cannabis, opioids, and black currant, making the arrest all the more significant. The apprehension took place in Awka, Anambra State, following a prior seizure of drugs in her Lekki residence.


The NDLEA also intercepted a consignment of 116.5 kg of Colorado, a potent strain of cannabis, hidden in bags among used vehicle parts. The shipment arrived in a container from Toronto, Canada, and was discovered through joint examinations involving the Nigeria Customs Service, Department of State Services, and other stakeholders. The illicit substance was concealed inside traveling bags, covered with used vehicle spare parts.


In addition to these arrests, the NDLEA's Directorate of Operation and General Investigations in Lagos thwarted attempts to export drugs through courier companies. They intercepted 336 grams of skunk hidden inside computer hard drives destined for Dubai, United Arab Emirates.


The NDLEA's efforts have played a crucial role in preventing drugs from reaching both local and international markets. The arrests demonstrate the agency's commitment to combating drug trafficking, safeguarding public health, and upholding the law. The successes underscore the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies and the public in the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trade.
