Nigeria's Falcons Determined to Win and Secure More Rewards at the World Cup
Nigeria's national women's football team, the Falcons, are hungry for victory as they face Australia in a crucial match at the Lang Park. Captain Onome Ebi expressed confidence in the team's performance, revealing that besides their passion for the game, they are also determined to earn more money from the tournament.
The tournament's format, with 32 teams, means only the top two teams in each group will progress to the knockout rounds, where more lucrative rewards await the players. Each player stands to receive $60,000 for reaching the round of 16 and $90,000 for reaching the quarter-finals. Teams that exit the group stage will earn $30,000 per player.
Ebi emphasized that while the financial incentives are essential, the players are primarily driven by pride and a desire to see Nigeria succeed on the international stage. They have set their sights beyond the group stage and are determined to make a significant impact in the tournament.
Having secured a draw against Canada in their opening match, a victory against Australia will enhance their chances of progressing to the round of 16, a feat they achieved in the last edition of the tournament in France.
For Australia, a win would put them at six points and significantly boost their chances of advancing to the round of 16, setting up an exciting clash with Olympic champions Canada.
As the only African team to earn a point in the Women's World Cup's first round, the Falcons are determined to lead by example and inspire other African nations represented in the tournament. Zambia, South Africa, and Morocco's women's teams were all unable to secure any points in their respective opening matches.
The Falcons' determination to succeed not only showcases their hunger for victory but also reflects their commitment to elevating women's football in Nigeria and the continent as a whole.
