Tinubu to Appoint 36 to 42 Ministers, says Omisore

The National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu plans to appoint between 36 and 42 ministers in his administration.

Omisore made this statement during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today. He explained, "According to the Constitution, there should be one minister per state, totaling 36, and one per geopolitical zone, making it 42, at the President's discretion. So the number could range from a minimum of 36 to a maximum of 42 ministers."

He further added, "We are currently engaging in consultations within the party to determine the structure of the ministries. Our aim is to align the ministries with the aspirations of Nigerians today, which may involve merging some ministries, rebranding others, and naming some anew, all in line with our agenda of Renewed Hope."

When asked about the possibility of Tinubu forming a Government of National Unity and including members of opposition parties such as former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Omisore stated that the decision rests with the President.

However, he acknowledged that discussions are ongoing between the President and the ruling party regarding the final ministerial list. Omisore emphasized, "There are technocrats who are also politicians. Some of us have achieved significant professional success, reaching the highest levels of academia. We are techno-politicos. Together, we will carefully consider the best interests of Nigerians and create a combined cabinet that will meet their expectations."

According to the constitution, the President is mandated to appoint a minister from each state and one from each geopolitical zone.

It is worth noting that during his first term, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed 36 ministers. However, when he was reelected in 2019, he nominated 42 ministers for his administration.
