ECOWAS Borders Closed and Sanctions Imposed on Niger Following Military Coup, Tinubu Informs Senate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has informed the Senate that all ECOWAS borders to Niger Republic are now closed following the military coup in the country. In addition to the border closure, electricity supply to Niger has been cut off, and further sanctions are underway.


The coup, which took place on July 26, led to the toppling of the democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, by his own guards. President Tinubu and other ECOWAS leaders convened on July 30th to discuss ways to restore democracy in Niger, with the focus on compelling the military junta to return power to the ousted President.


In the wake of these developments, ECOWAS has taken decisive actions, including the closure and monitoring of all land borders with Niger, reactivation of border drilling exercises, and mobilizing international support for implementing the provisions of the ECOWAS communique. The sanctions also involve preventing commercial and special flights into and from Niger, as well as blockading goods in transit to the country, particularly from Lagos and eastern seaports.


President Tinubu's letter to the Senate highlights the urgency of enforcing these measures to restore peace and stability in Niger. The focus is on encouraging compliance by the military junta and sensitizing both Nigerians and the international community about the necessity of these actions. Moreover, military build-up and personnel deployment are being considered for potential military intervention if the junta remains recalcitrant.


The actions taken by ECOWAS demonstrate its commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that elected leaders are reinstated in Niger. As the situation unfolds, the regional bloc is steadfast in its pursuit of restoring peace and democracy in the affected nation.
